Children traumatized by domestic violence, and sexual assault continue to receive comfort and reassurance from Operation Teddy Bear, a project of Victorian Lions Clubs, a program which, Judge Peter Couzens (centre)of the County Court of Victoria and President of the Childrens Court of Victoria. and Detective Senior Constable Mark Cain (left) of the Moorabbin Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Teams (SOCIT''s) praised highly when they recently addressed members of the Moorabbin Lions Club. (Pictured with President Bill Tomkinson.)

At any one time the Moorabbin Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team have around 280 active investigations, and monitor 300 registered sex offenders who have restrictions placed upon them.

Judge Peter Couzens described the often sad journey of many children who experience violence, trauma and extremely bad experiences coming before the Childrens Court. For children subject to permanent care orders, the court process together with their moving backwards and forwards to the parents or different carers often further traumatizes them and Judge Couzens emphasized the important role Operation Teddy Bear played in meeting their emotional needs.

Detective Senior Constable Mark Cain stressed the great comfort the Teddy Bears bring to children traumatized by child abuse - "it is wonderful that we do have the bears to give a human touch between us and the child."

Moorabbin Lions Club have recently donated a further $1000 to support Operation Teddy Bear. During the last twelve months with, support from Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs, the program has distributed in excess of 2500 to Victoria Police SOCIT''s, the Courts, the Victorian Ambulance Service, and the State Emergency Service to help meet the needs of very traumatized children.
